THE BEAUTY OF VITAMIN C
What is it exactly and how it works for our skin?
Vitamin C or also known as Ascorbic acid, belongs to the water-soluble vitamins commonly found in citrus fruits and has powerful antioxidant properties. Consumption of antioxidants, and in particular of the vitamin C that is contained in fruits, cannot really help our skin, as it’s utilized first by other organs of our body. So, at the right pH and concentration, vitamin C can penetrate also the skin through the skin layers. Antioxidant vitamin C protects the skin from free radicals, which are caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation, thus helping to prevent photo-ageing. At the same time, it stimulates the synthesis of collagen, which is a structural protein of the skin and ensures its elasticity and firmness. In addition, it inhibits the synthesis of melanin, through an enzyme called tyrosinase, giving radiance, and evening the skin’s tone and complexion.
Which are its benefits for the human body?
Vitamin C has many benefits in general for the human body and in particular for some systems, such as the immune, muscular and vascular systems. Studies have shown that topical application of 10% Vitamin C on our skin, reduces erythema or otherwise the redness caused by UV radiation by 52%, without this meaning that it replaces the use of sunscreen of course.
How it helps and benefits our skin?
Vitamin C has been shown to even be able to help and reduce the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. This is great news for those who are tired of trying to hide dark circles under their eyes and want to enjoy a more youthful, bright and vibrant look. Vitamin C has also been shown to reduce inflammation. This is ideal for people who tend to wake up in the morning and see puffiness around the eyes or other areas on the face. Studies have also shown that high levels of Vitamin C can help speed up the body’s natural healing processes. This makes it ideal for use on the face and other areas of the skin, as it can help heal small cuts, acne scars, and other blemishes more quickly and effectively. Finally, in addition to protecting you from the sun, vitamin C can also be effective in helping to speed up the healing of burns, to get rid of redness and find the relief you want from burning, and other related symptoms of a sunburn.
In what kind of products for the skin do I found it?
For topical skin application you can find it available in cosmetic creams, masks and serums but only the serums contain the active form with an almost transparent colour. Vitamin C is best in the form of L-ascorbic acid. Bear in mind that it’s a vitamin that is extremely sensitive as an ingredient and unstable to light that’s why can be easily oxidized. Its pH and concentration must be at the right level in order to be effective. Its effectiveness is depending to its concentration but the permissible limit is up to 20%. Thus, the products we choose should have a concentration of L-ascorbic acid of 10-20% and a pH of 2.5-3.5 to be effective.
How it should be used?
Ideally you need to apply a vitamin C serum to a cleansed skin every morning to have an adequate sun protection, and avoid to apply after sun exposure (evening hours). By applying a topical antioxidant will help to further protect the skin from ageing, which can be caused by air pollution, ultraviolet and infrared radiation. After applying a serum with vitamin C, we can use a moisturizer and then a sunscreen that will give our skin a proper protection.
What should I except after the application?
Sometimes after its application, it can cause erythema (a slightly redness), tingling feeling or dryness, so the additional use of a moisturizing product is recommended. Although it has anti-inflammatory action and theoretically has an indication for acne-prone skin and rosacea, but only with caution should be exercised in people with these conditions.
Which skin type will benefit from its use?
Mostly all skin types but especially, a dry, dehydrated and prematurely aged skin can benefit from vitamin C. As it’s a powerful antioxidant, it has been shown to protect the skin from oxidative stress as well. Vitamin C is essential for the overall health of the skin. It can even smooth out fine lines and wrinkles and lead to a more radiant complexion with fewer imperfections. If you suffer from skin redness or other skin discoloration, vitamin C in serum may also be able to help you achieve a more even skin tone and a better complexion. In particular, vitamin C is very effective in reducing annoying redness.
