What is Cryotherapy?

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy is a highly effective and non-invasive method used to remove unwanted warts. It is also a great treatment to remove other skin lesions, such as skin tags, and actinic keratosis.

Additionally, Cryotherapy helps minimise the appearance of wrinkles and spider veins, improve skin volume, and reduce under-eye bags, pore size, and hyperpigmentation.

The procedure usually only takes a few minutes. It is important to note, most warts require around 1 to 4 treatments generally spaced 1 to 3 weeks between each treatment. However, the number of treatments needed to achieve optimal results can vary depending on the wart’s size, location, and other factors.

How FreezPen® Cryotherapy treats warts

FreezPen® Cryotherapy involves the use of nitrous oxide (an exceptionally cold substance known for its ability to maintain a stable temperature) to freeze and eliminate abnormal tissue. The nitrous oxide is applied to the wart for about 5 to 20 seconds. This application causes a blister to form around the wart. The dead tissue sloughs off within about a week after the wart removal procedure.

Cryotherapy is considered safe for most healthy people, however, booking a consultation before booking a wart removal treatment is always recommended. You can schedule your FreezPen® Cryotherapy consultation at Skin Innovation Clinic, a leading skin clinic for non-invasive skin treatments in Brentwood.

What causes warts

What causes warts

Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (commonly referred to as HPV). HPV is an extremely common virus that infects the skin and spreads through close skin-to-skin contact, or by touching contaminated objects like towels or walking barefoot on shower floors. HPV can also be spread through sexual contact, but the strains of HPV that cause genital warts are different from those that cause warts on other parts of the body.

When the body becomes infected with the human papillomavirus, the virus causes the top layer of skin (epidermis) to produce too much keratin (a hard protein), which results in the rough, hard texture of a wart. Warts can take weeks or even months to develop after exposure to the virus.

Why is Cryotherapy so popular?

Cryotherapy is a quick and fairly painless procedure that uses advanced technology to effectively remove warts. It is recognised as the gold standard in wart and skin lesion removal and flaunts a swift recovery time.

The freezing process also stimulates the immune system to fight viral warts, and is a reliable solution to remove warts, skin tags, or other lesions.

At Skin Innovation, our Freezpen® Cryotherapy treatment is an excellent choice that ensures minimal discomfort and offers fast results.

Wart removal benefits

Wart removal benefits

Since warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), removing them reduces the risk of transmitting the virus to others or to other areas of your own body. Cryotherapy can also help boost self-confidence since warts (especially those located on areas like your face, hands, and feet) can cause people to become extremely self-conscious.

Not to mention, some warts can become irritated, bleed, or get infected. Removing them helps avoid these complications, especially in sensitive areas. This non-invasive and highly effective procedure requires no incisions or surgery and typically takes only a few minutes per wart. Healing is generally quick, and comes with little or no scarring, leaving your skin looking healthier, smoother, and blemish-free.

Is a wart removal treatment right for you?

Is a wart removal treatment right for you?

If you struggle with stubborn, resistant, genital, or clustered warts (such as plantar warts), Cryotherapy wart removal can help remove visible warts quickly and effectively.

However, Cryotherapy may not be suitable if you have poor circulation or diabetes, as healing might take longer. It may also not be the best choice in treatment if you have sensitive skin conditions, a history of keloid scarring, are pregnant, or have certain underlying health conditions like Raynaud’s disease.

Always consult with a healthcare professional or with one of our skin experts to ensure whether this treatment is the right treatment for you and your condition.

FAQs

How does a wart removal treatment work?

At Skin Innovation, we use the incredibly advanced FreezPen® Cryotherapy treatment in our wart removal procedures. This treatment uses nitrous oxide (a cryogenic agent) to effectively freeze warts and destroy the infected tissues. This causes the wart tissue to die and fall off over time.

Is Cryotherapy painful?

Cryotherapy is generally not considered painful, and it does not require anaesthesia. Most patients describe the sensation as a light pinching feeling during the treatment. Each session typically lasts a few minutes, depending on the size and number of warts being treated. That means, if you do experience some discomfort, it is short-lived.

What types of warts can be treated with Cryotherapy at Skin Innovation, Brentwood?

Our FreezPen® Cryotherapy technology can help treat common warts (Verruca Vulgaris) that typically appear on the hands, fingers, or knees. These warts are generally characterised by their cauliflower-like appearance. It can also help treat Plantar warts (Verruca Plantaris) found on the soles of the feet. As well as flat warts (Verruca Plana) that commonly appear on the face, neck, hands, or legs, and genital warts.

Is Cryotherapy safe for children?

Cryotherapy can be safely performed on children. However, having said that, we highly recommend you always book a consultation before booking any treatment, especially when it comes to treatments for minors, to ensure they are suitable candidates and know what to expect.

Can I return to normal activities after Cryotherapy?

Yes, you can resume most of your normal activities immediately after treatment. Remember to always keep the area dry and clean. Also avoid picking at blisters or scabs, and follow any aftercare instructions provided.

Does Cryotherapy prevent warts from coming back?

Even though Cryotherapy is an excellent way to remove existing warts with precision without harming healthy tissues, it does not prevent new ones from forming. HPV, the virus responsible for warts forming, can still infect other areas of your skin.

Can Cryotherapy be used on all areas of the body?

Yes, Cryotherapy can be used in most areas, but sensitive locations like the face or genitals may require extra care. It is important to note that Cryotherapy can also effectively treat painful warts, such as those on weight-bearing areas like the feet (commonly referred to as Plantar warts).
