A Guide To Laser Skin Rejuvenation
Our skin is vulnerable to a whole host of concerns, from wrinkles and age spots to acne scars. Laser skin rejuvenation uses the most advanced technology to improve your complexion, treating skin tone, texture, fine lines and more.
Our blog talks you through the science behind this form of skin rejuvenation, what to expect during the procedure and the impressive results of this laser treatment.
How Does It Work?
Our complexion is affected by multiple factors, from UV exposure causing photodamage to the natural process of ageing.
When we are young, our skin is smooth, plump and tight thanks to an abundance of collagen, a protein that helps to improve the skin’s elasticity, structure and firmness. When we get older, these stores of collagen deteriorate, leading to lax and tired-looking skin. The skin refuses to spring back into place when our muscles contract to smile or to frown, leaving creases and fine lines in the wake of our expressions.
This is where laser skin rejuvenation comes in, also known as laser skin resurfacing or laser skin renewal. This cosmetic procedure uses a laser device to send high-energy light beams into the skin, to be absorbed by targeted skin cells. The process stimulates the body’s natural healing response and triggers the production of collagen, which then generates a new layer of tight, plump and youthful-looking skin.
The process also targets irregular texture and pigmentation, including roughness, sunspots, age spots and acne scars. The laser energy breaks up the pigmented cells, while the new and healthy cells form a more even complexion and smoother skin texture.
Ablative And Non-Ablative Treatments
There are two main types of laser skin rejuvenation: ablative and non-ablative.
During an ablative treatment, the laser removes the epidermis, or the outer layer of skin. The heat from the laser stimulates collagen production in the underlying dermis, promoting the regeneration of new skin cells. When the wound heals, the new cells form a softer, less wrinkled and more even-looking complexion. The results are a considerable improvement, although the treatment does require more recovery time than its equivalent.
With non-ablative rejuvenation, the laser penetrates the skin without removing the outer layer, heating up the dermis to encourage regeneration and collagen growth. This treatment is gentler on your skin, with less downtime and faster recovery. However, it may require multiple sessions to get the same smooth, fresh-faced look.
What Does Laser Skin Rejuvenation Treat?
Laser skin rejuvenation can treat numerous conditions, such as:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Irregular tone and texture
- Sun damage and photoageing
The procedure can be used on your face, neck, chest and hands, with the condition of your skin and the desired outcome determining the type of laser, intensity and duration of the treatment. There are various types of lasers and treatment settings, allowing us to tailor the procedure to your concerns.
Whichever laser you choose, this form of skin rejuvenation is non-surgical and minimally invasive, typically requiring little to no downtime. If you’re looking for long-lasting results without going anywhere near an operating theatre, these laser treatments could well be for you. The improvements are often visible for several months to years after the procedure, although maintenance treatments may be recommended to sustain the results over time.
