Treating Dehydrated Skin
Nobody likes that tight, itchy feeling, especially when it comes over unexpectedly. Dehydrated skin is a nuisance, affecting both men and women, but no need to stress, there are many ways to get back your soft skin and natural glow.
Now, dehydrated skin is not the same as dry skin. The former lacks water, while the latter lacks oil. It’s even possible to have dehydrated skin that still produces an excessive amount of oil, leading to acne and breakouts.
Dry Vs. Dehydrated Skin
Let’s go in a little more detail. There are five skin types, and dehydration can occur in all of them. However, it’s most helpful for us to identify dry, dehydrated and combination skin, and to tailor our skincare in response.
Dry skin is usually easy to recognise. It feels tight, dry and has no oil. This can be exacerbated by the climate, season, activities and more. It requires its own proper skincare routine, which you can read about by tapping this link.
Combination skin means you have both oily and dry areas. Skin is commonly oily on the nose, cheeks and forehead but dry across the cheeks.
Meanwhile, dehydrated skin has the same dull, itchy feeling as dry skin, but is temporary, brought on by a number of factors.
Product Problems
You might think this skin problem is caused by abrasive scrubs and stiff-bristled cleansing brushes. They definitely don’t help, but dehydration is more likely a result of the wrong skincare routine. Many products contain harsh ingredients that disturb the skin barrier, which we need to protect to have healthy, happy skin.
For example, harsh ingredients like alcohol, peppermint and fragrances can dry out the surface of the skin, as well as stimulate excess oil production. You’re left with skin that feels uncomfortably dry but also oily, clogging up pores and bringing you out in spots.
Different people respond to different products, so look out for what causes a reaction in your skin. In general, we recommend:
- Using gentle cleansers
- Abandoning harsh scrubs
- Finding a hydrating toner
- Using boosters, serums and moisturisers with hydrating ingredients
Finding the proper skin routine will help you restore your dehydrated skin to its original radiance.
